Is it safe for a baby newborn to have a playpen as a crib?

because i have a playpen i bought yesterday, and my mom has a bassinet that she used to use for my brother that passed away from sids.. i don't know if she has it or gave it up. but i was wondering this is my first baby and is gonna be born around the 3rd or 10th of November. just asking for safety precaution.
